Why visit Otepää?

Rich in history, Otepää offers something for everyone. Our small town is surrounded by beautiful Estonian nature and lakes, and filled with a wide range of leisure opportunities and events.

Otepää can be visited in every season, as activities and cultural experiences can be found here all year round. Otepää is full of legends, history and culture — on one side you will find the church and Linnamägi hillfort, and on the other Lake Pühajärv, both true cultural gems.

In the centre of Otepää, the blue-black-white Estonian national flag flies atop Estonia’s tallest flagpole. The 20-metre flagpole was inaugurated on Estonian Flag Day, 4 June 2009, marking the 125th anniversary of the consecration and blessing of the first blue-black-white flag.

Next to the flag you will find information boards telling the story of the Estonian flag, as well as fascinating facts about Otepää’s history. The flag blessed in Otepää on 4 June 1884 first served as the flag of Estonian students, later became the national flag, and upon the establishment of the Republic of Estonia the blue-black-white colour combination was declared the national colours.

In Otepää, sights are not only what meets the eye. It is about embracing the beauty of nature, immersing yourself in local culture and creating unforgettable experiences. So come and discover Otepää — let its views and values leave a lasting mark on your heart and soul.
